The Falkirk Wheel Visitor Attraction

Scottish Canals

As part of the 2015 / 2016 Winter Works improvement programme, Scottish Canals wished to carry out a number of works both inside The Falkirk Wheel visitor attraction main building, and to the Public Realm areas to improve the visitor experience.  Works were also required to refurbish two of the four boats during the quieter winter / spring period.

The aim was to increase visitor numbers, increase revenue, improve the environment and address building ‘overheating’ issues.    The internal and external works were tendered and carried out by a number of Contractors on site whilst the boats were refurbished at a boat yard.  The scope of internal improvements included the following:-

  • New interpretation throughout the main building including specialist graphics
  • Improvements to café servery area and point of sale furniture
  • Retails sales area renewed with bespoke furniture within gift shop
  • New entrance / reception desk
  • Refurbishment of conference room and New Port Downie Building including works to Basin Masters Cabin

The external works comprised:-

  • New cargo decking area including timber sheds for retail and maintenance accommodation
  • New viewing platform
  • Serviced plot for airstream caravan

External canopies to shelter pontoon and queuing area
