Western General Hospital energy infrastructure

25/10/21

The first phase in a major project to modernise the Western General Hospital’s energy infrastructure system has been completed.

Over the last 16 months, work has been undertaken to replace and upgrade the critical energy infrastructure systems, which provides heat and power throughout the hospital.

The first phase was developed, to align with the immediate needs of the Oncology enabling projects, which starts the process of moving the site away from a centralised steam-based heating system through the construction of a new purpose-built heat centre located within the Scottish Health Service Centre.

Further phases will replace the existing HV electricity supply, heating network and boilers, with an alternative high efficiency and lower carbon alternative to increase site resilience and reduce NHS Lothian’s carbon footprint.
