We are delighted that the Old Schoolhouse Church project has been recently completed.
This project comprised the sensitive refurbishment of the Grade B listed Old Schoolhouse, Morningside, Edinburgh, with the aim of improving the internal space, expanding the facility and catering to the requirements and needs of the congregation.
The existing Minor Hall 2 was no longer deemed fit for purpose. It was demolished to create space for the new Minor Hall 2 within the tight site boundary. Minor Hall 2 now comprises a new entrance, kitchen facilities and WC’s. The Minor Hall 2 extension is finished in a Wienerberger Marziale facing brick, with architectural precast copes, cills and lintels. New Nordan windows and external doors have also been installed.
The new extension provides easy access into the Main Hall which was extensively refurbished to continue the quality of finish throughout. The Main Hall has received new flooring, decoration, decorative tongue and groove timber panelling around the perimeter of the hall, a new recess for a projector screen and new lighting. All these upgrades ensure that services can be delivered to the highest quality.
Minor Hall 1 also received a refurbishment including decoration, new flooring, lighting and a new purpose-made chair cupboard. A new glazed screen and external door were also installed to provide access to the new rear paved area. The roof to Minor Hall 1 was also replaced as part of the project.
Externally there is a new paved access to the main entrance of the Old Schoolhouse, as well as the wall leading to Cuddy Lane being altered to ensure that the windows in Minor Hall 2 are not blocked of any day light or views. The main gate has been replaced with new balustrades at the rear being installed, improving the access.
Thomson Gray were delighted to provide Contract Administrator, Quantity Surveying and Principal Designer services for the duration of the project. Working collaboratively with Mills + McCullough Architects, David Narro Associates as structural engineers and Smith & McMath as the principal contractor for the facility.
