The Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation comprises the extensive refurbishment and alterations to the Grade A listed former Royal High School Building on Infirmary Street, Edinburgh. Over the years a number of extensions were added, which were not always in keeping with the original Ashlar stone building. These have been demolished, and with the buildings future use in mind, have been reconstructed with low carbon materials such as highly engineered timber, and where possible, materials, (particularly steelwork) reclaimed from the demolition. The retained original elements of the building were stripped back to the shell, and are being reconstructed with the aim of achieving good energy efficiencies with a flexible use building, with the overall goal of achieving BREEAM (2011 Regulations) “Outstanding.” a world first for a building of its type.
