A new build primary school within the grounds of the existing Langlee Primary School. A constricted site in two phases, the first phase was to construct the new school to allow the decant and demolition of the existing school in the second phase. Built to accommodate 250 pupils, this facility is providing the much-needed modernisation of the existing primary school in one of the most deprived areas of Galashiels.
A striking, contemporary design by Glasgow Architects, Stallan Brand, the school and it’s surroundings required the partial demolition and clearance of the southern end of the site with the formation of the main steel framed block, and subsequent associated infrastructure, parking, MUGA and playgrounds. The school received an EPC certification rating of A and the building was completed on time and within budget.
Construction included piled foundations, gas venting system, steel frame, SFS inner leaf and outer leaf of stone and metal cladding, curtain walling, rainscreen and bronze look light ‘chimneys’ at roof level. Internally the building is a mix of internal plasterboard partitions, glazed screens and blockwork to stair and lift shafts, internal doors, finishes and plumbing, mechanical and electrical installations.
