Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2026
This week is Scottish Apprenticeship Week, and we are delighted to support apprentices and young people across Scotland.
At Thomson Gray, we are committed to creating high-quality opportunities for Scotland’s future workforce and supporting young people as they begin their careers in the construction and built environment sectors has always been a core part of our business.
Our apprenticeship programme reaches its tenth anniversary this year, a milestone that reflects our long-standing investment in developing emerging talent. Our first apprentice, Nick, joined us in April 2016 and began an HNC in the Built Environment at West Lothian College before progressing to complete a Graduate Apprenticeship degree in Quantity Surveying at Edinburgh Napier University.
Over the past decade, more than 15 members of our team have completed degree-level studies in Building Surveying, Quantity Surveying, or Construction Project Management at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh Napier University, or Glasgow Caledonian University. Today, we continue to grow our team of trainees and apprentices, with ten team members currently enrolled in Graduate Apprenticeship or master’s degree programmes.
Our apprenticeship and training pathways are designed to support professional growth, strengthen industry skills, and help shape the next generation of construction professionals in Scotland.
Managing Director Stuart Gray shared his feelings around employing apprentices and young people, and how this shapes the future workforce:
"At Thomson Gray, our long-standing commitment to nurturing talent is now delivering real benefits, with many of our current business leaders emerging directly from our training pathway. In my experience, young people bring a contagious energy and enthusiasm to the workplace, and it has been immensely rewarding to watch them develop into skilled professionals.”
Work Experience Opportunities
Euan McColl completed a 6-month placement at Thomson Gray, where he learnt about the world of project management from our team. Euan is studying a BSc (Hons) degree in construction management at Glasgow Caledonian University, with the placement at Thomson Gray covering the first semester of his third year. For Euan, the placement offered more than just practical experience, sharing that he learnt important skills such as running a professional meeting and following a contract as a project manager. Also developing soft skills such as leadership capabilities and time management skills, Euan hopes to stay in the construction consultancy industry in a project management role.
We’re proud at Thomson Gray to support the next generation of construction professionals, through apprenticeships and placements we aim to inspire and develop young people. We believe that learning goes beyond the classroom and are passionate about providing a space to thrive.
