As Chartered members of RICS, we were delighted to be involved in the September – October issue of RICS Construction Journal. The article – titled ‘Careful Consideration’ homed in on the types of contracts and procurement scenarios available for construction projects.
Key industry experts gave their professional, careful consideration to a range of topics and scenarios – the resulting article made for interesting and valuable reading for quantity surveyors and project managers within the construction industry.
In his capacity as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor (FRICS), Stuart Gray – Managing Director of Thomson Gray – was invited to debate procurement and contract strategies on a range of project scenarios. He was joined by three of his industry peers in the debate.
The team at RICS Construction Journal posed some testing scenarios to the debate team including:
- A client designing a new build scheme without fully considering vital aspects of the design. Tight budgets mean unexpected overspending is not a possibility
- Major new-build residential developments planned for a brownfield site – with existing buildings still in situ
- An extra lane is planned for an existing motorway. Existing heavy traffic flow must be well maintained and supported throughout the project
- A university wishes to build new student accommodation within a tight timescale. Modular builds are recommended to fit with the deadline, but nearby laboratories and buildings are adding to the pressure
To find out how Stuart and his peers responded to these all-too-familiar scenarios, download the article here. https://www.rics.org/uk/news-insight/publications/construction-journal/september-october-2019/
Relevant scenarios and responses begin on page 22, although the whole article is hugely insightful and we highly recommend reading it all.
